'Aydıntepe Sugar Bean' Registered with the Initiative of Bayburt University
Aydıntepe Sugar Bean, which was registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office with the initiatives of Bayburt University, received a geographical indication certificate.

Aydıntepe Sugar Bean, which is entitled to receive geographical indication as of 09.06.2021 to be protected as of 31.01.2020 within the scope of Article 41 of the Industrial Property Law No. 6769; After the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office's publication in the "Official Geographical Indication and Traditional Product Name Bulletin" dated 15.06.2021 and numbered 103, the registration procedures were completed.

In Aydıntepe district, where many endemic products are grown depending on the specific flora, nature and climatic conditions of the region; Sugar bean, which is produced with traditional agricultural techniques without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers, has become one of the registered products by receiving geographical indication.

Aydıntepe Sugar Beans, which are in high demand, are obtained from a local genotype identified with the region, have a unique taste and aroma, and are cooked in as little as fifteen minutes; It was the third product registered after 'Bayburt Ehramı' and 'Bayburt Honey'.

Before the registration process of Aydıntepe Sugar Bean, many scientific studies were carried out at Bayburt University. Comprehensive studies were carried out on the characterization of dried bean genotypes. The phenological and morphological characteristics of the product, whose field controls were made by the academicians of Bayburt University, were also analyzed and comprehensively analyzed.

Stating that the registration certificate given by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office will also make significant contributions to the promotion of Aydıntepe Sugar Bean, Bayburt University Rector Prof. Dr. Happy Turkmen; “Our Aydıntepe Sugar Bean, which is traditionally produced with ancestral seeds as well as special climate, soil, water and seeds, and registered with the initiative of our university, will increase its brand value with its geographical indication certificate. As a geographically indicated product, our beans will hopefully contribute to the development of the regional economy by providing more added value to our producers with its new brand value.” said.

Rector Türkmen said that efforts are being made to ensure that the local people earn a high income in production and to promote Aydıntepe Sugar Bean; “I would like to thank those who contributed to the protection of Aydıntepe Sugar Bean with geographical indication. I hope that the registration document will be beneficial for our city, district, university and producers.”
